The Alnem rootstock is a sieved almond rootstock. It is more suitable for fine soil – coarse marginal soil with a high percentage of limestone or gritty soil.
The Alnem rootstock is also suitable for medium soil, and its advantages in terms of the fruit are manifested also in this type of soil
Alnem rootstock advantages:
- Earlier harvest time
- Bigger fruit size
- Better fruit color
- Longer shelf life
Alnem rootstock disadvantages:
1. Sensitivity to agrobacterium – which cause tree mortality. This sensitivity can be dealt with chemical treatment. The tree should be kept strong, so that if it is treated correctly, it will be less affected by agrobacterium.
2. Sensitivity to nematodes – this sensitivity can be dealt with chemical treatment. This sensitivity can be dealt with chemical treatment. The tree should be kept strong, so that if it is treated correctly, it will be less affected by nematodes.
3. Tree mortality – the Alnem rootstock involves tree mortality over the life span of the orchard, even with the maximum correct treatment. In case of tree mortality, this variety shortfall can be complemented with the Hansen or 677 replanting rootstocks, which close the harvest gap.
4. In order to take full advantage and maximize the benefits of the Alnem rootstock, extensive professional expertise is required regarding the correct growth of various varieties using this rootstock, due to its great sensitivity.
