Selection of Rootstocks and Seedling Varieties

Selection of Rootstocks and Seedling Varieties

1. Rootstock selection

The soil composition influences the selection of the rootstock.

The soil composition is affected by:

• % of total limestone (CaCo3)

• The mechanic composition of the soil – % of sand, silit and clay

• Acidic or basic Ph

• Soil moisture (Soil Point).

• Electrical conductivity

• Quantities of Na, Ca and Ma

2. Variety selection

• The climatic conditions affect the selection of the varieties:

• Temperatures – minimum and maximum temperatures

• Day and night temperatures throughout the four seasons (summer, autumn, winter and spring)

• Percentage of relative humidity

• Level of rainfall in millimeters

• Number of chilling units / chilling hours

Shutan Nurseries matches the rootstocks and seedling varieties and types to the soil composition and climatic conditions.
